Tips for Job Fairs

This time of year is a crucial time for college students to start networking for future internships and/or full time positions. One of the best ways to do this is by attending job fairs. They can be intimidating at first, but I have found them to be extremely helpful to me. Here are five tips I have learned from my experience for how to make the most out of a job fair:

  1. Dress professionally. It is typically recommended to wear business professional attire to a job fair and you don’t want to get there to find yourself underdressed.
  2. Introduce yourself and tell them why you are there. You should come prepared with an elevator pitch on who you are and what you are looking for. It helps initiate the discussion and leads to better conversation if you come prepared with what you are going to say.
  3. Take notes. It has been very helpful for me to take notes as I speak with a recruiter so I can refer to them later on. Job fairs can feel like a whirlwind so writing down the information will help you remember it afterwards.
  4. Bring a lot of paper resumes. I offer a paper resume to everyone who I speak with at job fairs. Recruiters typically highlight items on your resume that fit with the company and then they often pass them on to managers at the company to evaluate. If there are no positions open at a company, it is nice to have a resume with a recruiter in case anything opens up in the future.
  5. Ask the recruiter for their information. If nothing else, get the name of the recruiter so you can connect with them on LinkedIn and message them in the future if you have any questions about their company or job openings.
