Elementary education has a lot of turn-offs for some people. These may include working with kids, a lack of patience, an absurdly low pay and lack of respect from society.
For me, every time I step into a classroom I breathe a sigh of relief because it feels like I have come home. The grade I am hoping for is 5th grade. The upper grades still share that love of learning the little ones do but rarely throw tantrums and definitely should know how to tie their own shoes and put on snow pants.
As for the absurdly low pay, I was never in it for the money. I think I can get by just fine on $35,000 per year with increases each year I teach and also as I go on to earn my masters. This system is called steps and ladders.
I entered CSS intent on majoring in Nursing, as most do, but although I know I would be good at it. I think I would be happier as a teacher because it is where I am passionate.
