As a first semester in the Elementary Education you are required to do a field experience. The one I have on Tuesdays is in Proctor, Minnesota and needs a car to get to but is definitely worth the travel.
At Pike Lake Elementary School, I am with Mrs. Shanoff. She is an older teacher but very inspiring to me in the way she not only interacts with me but also the kids in her classroom. This classroom is hands down, the most respectful and kind one I have ever been in. The kids ask questions one at a time with hands raised politely and rarely have loud, chatty moments. Mrs. Shanoff is usually patient but when kids ask questions about assignments the first thing she asks is, “have you looked at everything you possibly could have to find the answer?” (ie a dictionary, textbook or sometimes, google) and 9 times out of 10 the kids will respond with, “well, I haven’t done this yet!”
If you are looking at becoming an Elementary Education major and have a car, I highly recommend Mrs. Shanoff because she treats everyone as an equal and lets you really see how rewarding it is to be a teacher.
